Spoil Engine - Skinnerbox V.07 Apache Productions file under Speed / Thrash metal
Patrick: One of the best things of writings reviews is that you sometimes come across unknown bands. Quite a large part of it is average, but once in a while you are lucky to get in contact with something which can be seen as a nice surprise; and that is exactly what is happening with the Belgium band Spoil Engine.
The four Belgians and their Dutch front man dish up a firm chunk of metal; heavy, technical thrash, a little Gothenburg death influences and a large amount of groove. A little Soilwork, pinch of Chimaira and maybe even a little Shadows Fall, but the comparison which is most likely will be, without any doubt, be the one with Machine Head. The songs are loaded with melodic parts, great riffs, pounding paces, groovy parts, a lot of variety, a propelling dynamic and fluently changes in rapidity. All tracks come across very intense, heavy, aggressive and fervent; which is also caused by the vocals of Niek Tournois, that are extreme powerful, ferocious and convincing. The execution is very, very tight, especially by the startling rhythm section, in which the double bass pedal gets pounded heavily. The production has been done by Jochem Jacobs of Textures and he has taken care of a bright, though energetic sound which fits the heaviness of tracks such as ‘Enter The Arena’, ‘Nihil’, ‘Danilah Breaks’, ‘Voices Of Escape’.
‘Skinnerbox V.07’ by Spoil Engine is a very convincing, impressive and qualitatively exceedingly strong debut album which is enjoyable from the beginning until the end. I am totally convinced by the quality of this band and tell you, you will not think different when you have heard ‘Skinnerbox V.07’. Rating: 86/100 (details)
