Daath - The Hinderers Roadrunner Records file under death metal / grindcore
Richard G.: If you do it, you had better do it right. Something like this must have been the motto of the American experimental death metal outfit Daath. Their Roadrunner debut (not the smallest record company) ‘The Hinderers’ went through the hands of people like James Murphy (ex-Death a.o.), Andy Sneap and Colin Richardson. Apart from this expensive list, the website also tells us that ‘The Hinderers’ is the first concept album in a series of thirteen (!). I will not bore you here with an extensive exposé of this Kaballah-inspired concept. If you are very interested, the band has a detailed explanation of everything on their nice website.
The sound of Daath is very original to say the least. The death metal riffs are drenched in electronics and the keyboard is pretty prominent in playing all kinds of extra sounds and adding bombastic effects resulting in a spooky and mysterious atmosphere. The riffing reminds me the most of Samael in its ‘Passage’ and ‘Eternal’ days, but Daath goes much further than playing stomping riffs. Progressive elements like quiet melodic parts and technical guitar bits are added for variation as well as convincing soloing. Daath’s sound is extremely difficult to describe in words and everyone should really experience it for themselves. ‘The Hinderers’ sticks out because of its unconventionality (just listen to the Aphex Twin-like ‘Dead On The Dance Floor’) and makes me look forward in anticipation to the next twelve records (should be good for a career span of at least 26 years).
