Sabaton - Attero Dominatus Black Lodge file under heavy / power metal
Patrick: Swedish band Sabaton is one of the few bands within the power metal who knew how to present themselves whit a somewhat sound of their own, being indebted mainly by the deep vocals of vocalist Joakim. With the release of ’Primo Victoria’ in 2005 the band has convinced many fan of melodic metal and gained them as fan. Right away the band was also asked on an European tour with Edguy and Dragonforce.
At ‘Attero Dominatus’ the Swedes rattle on as they did on ‘Primo Victoria’. Songs like the title track Attero Dominatus’, ‘Nuclear Attack’, ‘We Burn’ and ‘Back In Control’ are similar to tracks like ‘Counterstrike’ and ‘Into The Fire’; they are being propped by heavy riffs, bombastic refrains, a steady till fast pace and the always raw vocals by Viking front man Joakim Brodén. And despite the fact that most of the songs are simply structured, they remain interesting time and time again. Unfortunately the cd has some minor letdowns as well. The more than eight minutes lasting ‘Rise Of Evil’ is quite bombastic, but the band is repeating itself to much to keep the interest for the full length. It should not have been that difficult to make an appealing four-minute song out of it. And a song as ‘Angels Calling’ knows a slower pace, and despite the theatrical keyboard middle part, it gets indolent so some extent.
At ‘Attero Dominatus’ all the tracks are again about war and all the accomplishing sorrow and misery. But the Swedes have their humour as well! Just listen to ‘Metal Crüe’. The lyrics of this song deserve your attention as all sorts of band names are interwoven into it. Accept, Annihilator, Crimson Glory, Destruction, Gamma Ray, Holy Moses, Kiss, Maiden, Metal Church, Motörhead, Priest, Pretty Maids, Rage, Slayer and Venom are inventively built-in with a hilarious wink.
'Attero Dominatus’ is a logical musical sequel, which might not be as surprising as predecessor ‘Primo Victoria’, but it is a disc which will give those who like heavy and power metal many pleasant hours of playing time! Rating: 82/100 (details)
