Grave - As Rapture Comes Century Media file under death metal / grindcore
Tormentor Erich: The story of Grave so far (and shortened): in the early ninetieths these Swedish dudes played a nice part in the (at that moment luxurious Scandinavian) death metal scene. But after the first two very strong records the newer releases were less well received by some fans. (In other words: some said it became too commercial). Finally the band split up to become reality again in 2002. In 2002 and 2004 Grave released ‘Back from The Grave’ and ‘Fiendish Regression’ and both albums received very positive reviews, so it looks like a well deserved come back. 2002, 2004, and yes, also in 2006 the men around front man Ola Lindgren present us a new album. This time the songs were recorded in the Soulless Studio and the cement was mixed in by Peter T‰gtren at his Abyss Studio.
And the result? Well, according to me ‘As Rapture Comes’ turns out to be a good and firm death metal album that has got all the typical Grave elements in it. Opener ‘Burn’ makes a point not only because of the slow parts and the guitar solo’s, also the “Grave-groove” is back. But watch it, during ‘Through Eternity’, ‘By Demons Bred’, ‘Unholy Terror’ and ‘Epic Obliteration’ (completed with some Morbid Angel sounding parts) de band goes full speed. These songs are devilish fast the Grave way, and this is very tasty. These tracks are also mixed on the album with songs that are a bit slower like the already mentioned opener and ‘Battle Of Eden’ and therefore the album never gets dull or boring. But maybe the best way to start with this album is by listening to ‘Living The Dead Behind’ (yes I know, this is a strange title but it is written like this on the promo CD) and the title track, because these songs contain all the ingredients that are so remarkable for this album. Further (and in general) I noticed that there is a lot of aggression at ‘As Rapture Comes’. Ola sings just a little bit darker and deeper, the new drummer Pelle must have been a woodcutter before because he really is hitting it hard and the solo’s have a sharp edge. Grave shows via ‘As Rapture Comes’ that they are for sure not finished yet, this album kicks butt!
Oh yes, I almost forgot. If you think that the song ‘Damn Bones’ sounds a bit familiar then you are right. This track is original from Alice In Chains and Grave covered it very well and in their own style. Check it out.
