Cult Of Luna - Somewhere Along The HighwayEvil Dr. Smith: Oh no, not again! Don’t we have enough of those post-apocalyptic rages of ultra long, sludgy metal-meets-hardcore albums? Neurosis and the late Swans did this kind of thing fifteen years ago, so why doing it over and over again? Well, as long as Cult Of Luna proves there’s still a possibility to give more depth, sophistication and intensifying to this format, there’s only one justifiable answer: YES, we need more of this!

The band’s previous album, ’Salvation’ was a crushing introverted interpretation of this style of music, and became an instant milestone, which gave the band an distinguished sound among all those other post-hardcore/post-metal bands. This fourth album contains more of these subdued passages, it’s even more refined, and it’s also not only played in emphasized dark minor keys – there’s a spark of hope shining through the thick mist of dark doom – and this gives the cleverly build-up rage eruptions even more impact. ‘Finland’ is now already the song for post-hardcore/metal what My Dying Bride’s «ry Of Mankind’ is for doom metal: an icon, a benchmark, the ultimate classic with the perfect leitmotiv. A slightly different sound brings the beautiful ‘And With Her Came The Birds’, which contains an almost alt.country-style due to the use of a steel guitar and where the tempo in the second part slows down to the level of Bohren & Der Club Of Gore.

‘Somewhere Along The Highway’ is light and darkness in one, which rushes down with such enormous volume and intensity towards you, that you’ll helplessly be swallowed by it, drown in it and it takes over your life for 65 minutes. The only two reasons why this album is just a tiny fragment less revolutionary than its predecessor, is because of the artwork, which is less striking minimal, and because of the simple fact that we had ‘Salvation’ before this album. But listen to this album and you’ll experience a musical autoerotic asphyxiation that you won’t hear again this year. First priority album for fans of Hyatari, Isis, Khoma, Amenra, The Ocean and Neurosis.
