Communic - Waves Of Visual Decay
Nuclear Blast

file under speed / thrash metal

Communic - Waves Of Visual DecayFrank D.: And then I got the new album of Communic (‘Waves Of Visual Decay’) assigned to me. I had that honour before when the gents released their debut-album 'Conspiracy In Mind' last year. Let’s put it this way, that album didn’t make a believer out of me.

Back then it was mainly due to the vocals of singer/ guitarist Oddleif Stensland Communic didn’t win me over. I used words like “out of place in a thrash metal track” and “this meek performance” to describe it. But this is a new album, so new chances all around. Communics brew is still distilled from a mix of bands like Kreator, Marillion en Iced Earth. But fair is fair, there the comparison with the debut ends. Although the new album has the same vibe as the debut, Oddleifs singing has improved quite a bit. Even more, the progressive power metal with death elements sounds just superb. A solid production, a good balance between aggression, soundscapes and subtleness and more than one surprising twist and turn keep me focussed the entire 57 minutes ride. The album opens with the powerful ‘Under A Luminous Sky’. Listen to those high pitched passages of Oddleif (Hello, Rob Halford!) Yes, the band kept everything good and worked on the weaker points. The result is ‘Waves Of Visual Decay’; an album with which Communic lives up to their potential. Just listen to the Metallica-like riff in ‘Frozen Asleep In The Park’, the atmospheric and dark ‘Watching It All Disappear’ and the blistering ‘My Bleeding Victim’ in which Oddleif proves he can hold his own and turns me into a believer. I can only tip my hat here.

It’s clear that Communic made a giant leap forward. Since the debut was hailed all over the world and this new album upstages that album on every front, this album could well be the push into the major league.
