In Flames - Come Clarity
Nuclear Blast

In Flames - Come ClarityPatrick: No beating around the bush and let I just start straight away with what I want to say: ‘Come Clarity’ is the best album by In Flames yet and the amount of superlatives for this disc are almost uncountable. The band really outshone them selves at every possible level. In Flames has always been a band with a lot of diversity in their music and this new release is no exception to that rule. The Swedes choose a somewhat different musical approach on ‘Come Clarity’ than as they did on ‘Soundtrack To Your Escape’ and ‘Reroute To Remain’. On the previously named albums there was a lot of melody, slower songs and clean vocals, but this time Anders and friends return to what they do best: making ferocious, fast songs. And the result is exactly how it should be: jagged songs without being disposed of any melody and with enough of refrains which echo in your head easily. What a nice balance between intensity, aggression and melody this turns out to be!

With a different musical approach the fluent riffs and razor-sharp solos return. The solos are played very tight and Jesper and Björn show us some surprising, impeccable riffs and sounds (intro ‘Take This Life’). Anders reaches a higher level as well: he is snarling and growling like in his best days and uses his clean vocals less than as on the latest cd’s. But most of all it are the emotions that reverberate in his voice. In the title track, which is the only slower song at this cd, he sounds full of passion and you feel with him when he sings “I want you to lead me. Take me somewhere. Don’t want to live in a dream one more day!” Such a great piece of singing; especially when you release Anders recorded the vocals with only the parts of the drums! Besides these things the catchy refrains are preserved and the influence of the electronics has been reduced quite some. Just listen how subtle the electronics have been used in a track as ‘Vacuum’. No rebukes can be made on the production; it is both spotlessly clean but also gives the songs an enormous amount of aggression and roughness. Most experimental song id the track ‘Dead End’ on which Swedish vocalist Lisa Miskovsky add a surprising and stubborn tinge. Her high, somewhat delicate voice is a nippy contract with the brawling of Anders and the heavy riffs. The result is a remarkable fine song!

The promo cd contains twelve of the thirteen tracks which will be included at ‘Come Clarity’. The thirteenth track, which already protrudes by its name (‘Your Bedtime Is Scaring Everyone’), is missing. Just as the DVD (on which the songs of this album will be played live in a studio), but even when all these extra things would be missing at the final cd, it is enough to be obligated stuff already! All those fans who thought In Flames was no longer capable of writing better or equal songs as ‘Episode 666’ or ‘Pinball Map’ will get the surprise of their life: these are twelve of them!
