Capricorns - Ruder Forms Survive
Rise Above Records

Capricorns - Ruder Forms SurviveErik: I wasn’t that impressed with the first MCD of this London based band. The service in other bands however is impressive, seeing this talent being trained in Iron Moneky, Orange Goblin, Bridge & Tunnel and Dukes Of Nothing. I can do nothing else but review my opinion because where the MCD was too short to get a decent impression, this CD raises my eyebrows more than once. And that is a good thing! The collaboration with Eugene Robinson of the mighty Oxbow gives us the melancholic ‘The First Broken Promise’, a desperate cry for something hopeless. His vocals are actually the only ones found on this CD, since there’s no other use of vocal chords on this CD. Well, except for the “Raise Your Right Hand!” sentence in ‘1946: The Last Renaissance Man’. This “dumb” CD differentiates Capricorns from the rest for sure. This is no Pelican or Boris who enchant the listener with vocal-less drones, but this is a swinging stoner rock band with loads of interesting breaks, nice melodies, superb drumming and great riffing. You do not miss a singer, although the track with Eugene has something. However the music is nice, the lay out is in my opinion awfully sad and of amateur level. It captures the “Chtulhu” theme alright, if that ever was the case, but even then the drawing is painfully unattractive. That Rise Above allowed this! More so, if you see the simple but artistic photo shoot, I can not get it that this lay-out is so… bad ( to say it nicely)… A great and interesting CD, what so ever….
