Tears - Falling Certainly (Mini-CD) Self-financed file under alternative / pop
Patrick: Tears originally hail from Greece, but for now the four members have established themselves in Southampton, England. The band was formed in 1996 by Yannis Matagos, who writes most of the songs and further exists of Kostas Korkidas (backing vocals, keyboards and piano), Tassos Deligiannis (drums) and George Politi (bass). The band recorded and released a promo tape in 2000 and now releases an EP ‘Falling Certainty’, of which all songs have been written in 2000 and 2001 and from which two tracks were already on the demo from 2000. Although the band states on their website that they have recorded new songs in 2004, they have chosen to release some older material. There will be many reasons to contrive why they have decided to do so, but to me it is a complete mystery!
Tears play progressive rock at which the acoustic guitar and a dominant piano get the emphasis. Openings track ‘Things Imaginary’ is a serene song which reminds me for some reason of The Nits (indeed: that symphonic band from the eighties which thought that there are mountains in the Netherlands). ‘Self Destruction’ is the next song and this one is divided in three parts, lasts eleven minutes and forms the core of the demo. The song regrettably is not that spectacular, but has its’ outstanding moments and is full of changes in pace and melancholy. ‘Tempo Master’ is the most notable song of the demo. Not only because it is the ‘heaviest’ track, but also because of the wide diversity within the song and the likeable guitar riffs it has. ‘A Beginning After Each End’, the sixth song, is nothing else than an outtro which closes the twenty-two minutes lasting EP.
This band has quite some quality and potential. Fans of bands as Dire Straits en The Nits will like the introduction with this band. And that the band is convinced of its’ quality is reflected in the Money back guarantee that comes with the cd; if you do not like the EP you can sent it back and have your money returned!
