Darkane - Layers Of Lies
Nuclear Blast

file under speed / thrash metal

Darkane - Layers Of LiesRichard G.: This is without a doubt the album of the month for me. The progression that Darkane has made on their four observation ‘Layers Of Lies’ is immense. Its predecessor ‘Expanding Senses’ was despite its technical gallery play in a way a bit flawed, because it resulted in some passages being quite hard to follow. Also, the compactness of the material on that album left little breathing space. Fortunately all this has been mended on ‘Layers Of Lies’, because the band presents us with the perfect combination of technicality, aggression and melody. It all starts off a bit pompous and bombastic with the intro ‘Amnesia Of The Wildoerian Apocalypse’, but when the single-to-be ‘Secondary Effects’ kicks in, you know that all is well (better even!). Without forgetting where they come from, the material sounds a lot more accessible, which is mostly due to the, frighteningly catchy, mighty choruses. I can’t wait to shout the title track ‘Layers Of Lies’ along with the entire audience, this one just cannot be removed from my head. The band obviously benefited greatly from having their own studio, the material is not only constructed better, Andreas Sydow’s vocals are more varied than ever. The only disappointment for me was the fact that the CD ends (a bit suddenly). Technical thrash masterpiece!
