Molly Hatchet - Warriors Of The Rainbow Bridge Steamhammer/SPV file under hardrock / aor
Horst: I wonder if there are bands around whose album covers conflicted more with the musical content than is the case with Molly Hatchet. Most of their covers display rough, tough, almost Manowar-ish warriors, dragons and more of the same, and I can imagine that the average consumer who isn’t familiar with the band tends to think that we’re dealing with an authentic power metal outfit here. I mean, that genre goes hand in hand with dungeons, dragons and all other kinds of fantasy stuff.
Of course the fans know better than that, but for everybody who accidentally stumbled upon this review: no, Molly Hatchet is not a new power metal band, but a southern rock outfit that comes and goes around for the past 25 years now, and in that time put out a whole bunch of cool albums. With the release ‘Warriors Of The Rainbow Bridge’ the band delivers the sixth album for SPV. And nope, also the lyrics – although the album title does suggest otherwise – don’t have shit to do with fierce Vikings and other sword-wielding folk. As far as I can make out it is all about booze, chicks, bikes, cowboys, home sweet home and the bond between friends and family. In a nutshell, the typical southern lifestyle one seems to can find in the southern part of the United States of America.
Musicwise the new tunes sound very familiar, but then again so cool. Yeah I know, the band is repeating itself, but somehow I don’t mind such with Molly Hatchet. Just like AC/DC the band has such a typical own sound, any altering of that would be sacrilege. For what does the fan expect? Right, an album written and recorded according to that same old, yet tasty, recipe. In essence, take a few pounds of mid-tempo swing, mix that with a handful of fast rockers (and do not forget the traditional hymn in the ‘Freebird’ way). Add to this the right amount of piano, just a tat of slide-guitar and frost it with no less than three guitars. And there you have it, your own Molly Hatchet casserole. Not in any way surprising, adventurous, and certainly not haute cuisine, but a good and honest meal, just the thing you need after a hard day in the swamp. Rating: 83/100 (details)
