Morgul - All Dead Here…
Season Of Mist

file under black/pagan metal

Morgul - All Dead Here…Roel de Haan: Morgul’s last effort ‘Sketch of Supposed Murderer’ was very interesting to me but hard to get into. Influences seemingly coming from everywhere made it wasn’t an easy job to understand the album. After many turns in my cd player I finally got it and many hours of enjoyment followed. So now the successor ‘All Dead Here…’ is here. It becomes immediately clear that Morgul is trying a different approach this time around. The many influences are still there but packed into a more metal-like setting. Consequently, I didn’t have to listen to it as much as to ‘SoSM’ to fully appreciate it. The combination of black, industrial and heavy metal with gipsy-like violins and some piano turns out surprisingly cohesive, I never have the feeling the Jack D. Ripper is experimenting for the sake of experimenting. The aforementioned typing of the music is actually irrelevant because Morgul isn’t to be placed in corners, which is extremely rare in metal these days. This is by itself a reason to subdue this release to a listen. The songs are well written and flow fluently, helped by an excellent production. The whole thing is wrapped in a nice blasphemical coat and therefore it has a malignant character. Morgul has succeeded in making a more brutal and accessible album without losing its originality. People who are open to originality and unusual influences should give this cd a try.
