Impellitteri - Pedal To The Metal
Steamhammer/SPV

file under hardrock / aor

Impellitteri - Pedal To The MetalRalph: It always has been a horrible name to pronounce and to write; Impellitteri. The guys name is probably just as complicated as his flashy guitar techniques. Chris Impellitteri has been around for some time already but never got to a point that brought him alongside people like Yngwie Malmsteen, Marty Friedman or Paul Gilbert, to name a few.

I am sure that his technique and skills are no less then any of those mentioned before, but when it comes to a certain commercial success, Chris stayed behind and mainly a thing well known by insiders. In a way that is a shame because the ‘band’ –although in just as many line ups- made some really good albums. Especially ‘Stand In Line’ released in 1988 seemed to become a smash and a breakthrough to a larger crowd and commercial success. After all Graham Bonnet (Rainbow) handled the vocal duties and the songs were catchy. A great album that deserved the same destiny as Malmsteen’s ‘Odyssey’ if you ask me. How different things would turn out…

Enough for history, on to the here and now. ‘Pedal To The Metal’ is a fresh sounding album with this new line up and Impellitteri made a real nice rock/metal album here. Heavy mainly, like ‘The Iceman Cometh’ shows. Vocalist Curtis Skelton is a great win for this band, especially when we think back of the latest effort ‘System X’ where Chris brought in Bonham again, this time not as spectacular as it was in 1988. ‘Dance With The Devil’ opens furious (after the intro) and is a very varied track that has some really nice breaks. The riffs on the album are (thank god) not only written with the ‘as many notes as possible’ principal in mind. Fans of shredding and speed won’t be disappointed though because Chris does more then enough of that as well. The last track ‘Writings On The Wall’ could easily be described as power metal.
