Communic - Conspiracy In Mind
Nuclear Blast

file under speed / thrash metal

Communic - Conspiracy In MindFrank D.: “Progressive Power/ Thrash Metal” states the bio that I received with the CD ‘Conspiracy In Mind’ of the Nordic band Communic. A crossbreed of Dream Theater, Iced Earth and Kreator? That holds a promise.

The CD opens with the title track ‘Conspiracy In Mind’. A full nasty guitarsound and rugged drums fill the room. “Yes”, I hear myself think,” Thrash metal optima forma! YES!” In Holland there’s an old saying which goes something like “Don’t praise the day, before it is over”. Well, as soon as guitarist Oddleif Stensland starts singing, the meaning of this old wisdom hits me like a brick. Although Offleif is equipped with a good progressive power metal voice, it sounds out of place in a thrash metal track like ‘Conspiracy In Mind’. It takes Oddleif to the Marillion-esque ‘They Feed On Our Fear’ before he can wash away this meek performance. And during the whole course of the album I keep on having second thoughts about the whole thing. On the one hand there’s nothing wrong with the compositions and the technical execution of them, but on the other hand: Stensland’s voice doesn’t fit into the picture when things get thrashy. And due to this the album as a whole doesn’t convince me and that’s a shame. Because tracks like ‘They Feed On Our Fear’, ‘History Reversed’ and ‘Silence Surrounds’ are most certainly worthwhile, and with the right vocals this would also be the case for the rest of the album.

To rap things up: Communic tries to boldly go where no man has gone before, but that doesn’t mean that it is a full-fledged success.

Score 65/100 (details)
