 Ralph: Chimaira was born some five years ago in Cleveland, Ohio and a lot has happened to this band since then. Together with Killswitch Engage are the pioneers of the ‘New Wave Of American Metal’, and their career went accordingly. Especially after the release of ‘The Impossibility Of Reason’ (2003) the band becomes ‘hot news’, and now here is the DVD, with ll the ups and downs of the past years.
Roadrunner did a good job, because this is everything you want it to be. The hard to get EP ‘This Present Darkness’ is one part of the DVD/CD set, and comes with some bonus tracks. It is typical Chimaira; full of energy and aggression, but it mainly shows the progression this band made over the years. The fun part however is the DVD. A 90-minute documentary gives a fabulous inside on a band that starts and works hard to realize a dream. The viewer is taken on a trip through the recording process of ‘The Impossibility Of Reason’ and all decisions being madeduring that time, like an argument about the track ‘Stays The Same’ being too commercial, and the personal lives of the individual members. Besides the band members we see their manager and Monte Conner (Roadrunner) talk among others, and the film painfully shows the ‘drummer issue’ this band struggles with. Original drummer Andols Herrick is there, but also Ricky Evensand (Soilwork, Demonoid) and current skinsman Kevin Talley are featured in the documentary. Live on the road is shown in all its beauty in venues and on busses. Al together this is a complete story with a high fun factor, so to speak. For all the Dutch fans there is a special treat, because the live show on the DVD was filmed at the 013 club in Tilburg during the Roadrage tour. ‘Powertrip’, ‘Cleansation’, ‘Eyes Of a Criminal’, ‘Down Again’, ‘The Dehumanizing Process’ and ‘Pure Hatred’ all of the last album and ‘Severed’ of ‘Pass Out Of Existence’ are in the set list.
A handful of extra’s – all of the band’s videos for instance - complete the package and make this DVD worth the money. Just picture it; a live show, a lengthy documentary, an EP and the extras. Great for all fans of the band, but also a perfect way of getting to know Chimaira and let them win you over.
