Unearth - The Oncoming Storm
Metal Blade

file under punk / hardcore

Unearth - The Oncoming StormPim S.: Holy shit, what a killer blow this album by Unearth is! From the very first seconds it’s made clear what to expect from this band. This is metal with a lot of attention for melody and aggression. Unearth may have a background in the hardcore-scene, but with this record they have the metal world at their feet. I can understand why the infamous Metal Blade signed this band.

This band gets its influences from both American and European metal. The Göteburg-sound pops up every now and then, but there are just as many Maiden-esque guitar loops and devastating breakdowns. Interesting is the fact that this album was produced by Adam Dutkiewicz from Killswitch Engage. In the producing business this guy clearly belongs with the big boys now. The production of this album is so good, it’s scary. The way that these eleven songs blast through the speakers is insane!

Musically, there are some similarities between Unearth and Killswitch Engage. The biggest difference, however, is that Unearth is simply more brutal. Killswitch Engage is clearly a bit softer (more commercial?). My favourite song on this album is the amazing ‘Black Hearts Now Reign’, of which there is also a professional video on this cd. But even without extra’s like that I still would’ve loved this album. It is very obvious that these guys are very talented musicians with excellent song writing skills.

It gets really frustrating when looking for any flaws when it concerns this album. I simply cannot find anything: the artwork is gorgeous, the website looks excellent, it just goes on and on. But the most important thing is that Unearth provides us with a blueprint of how to make metal in the 21st century. I’m almost sure that this will be the best record of this year. Buy or die!
