Babylon Mystery Orchestra - On Earth As It Is In Heaven Self-financed file under doom metal
Ferdi: The one-man orchestra based around Sidney Allan Johnson is back with its second cd. The cd has a complex concept, in which Johnson tries to explain the ancient roots of hardrock through historical-Christian perspective. The result is an album with thirteen heavy, groovy songs that borrow heavily from Nick Cave, Cathedral and recent Tiamat.
Babylon Mystery Orchestra is a strange band. Strange, because there is nothing pretty, catchy or grand about it. The vocals are not pretty from an aesthetic point of view, the tempos are slow and the songs lack melody. And still ‘Earth As It Is In Heaven’ has a quality that is hard to define. Is it curiosity that drove me to put on the album time and time again? The lack of pretty elements can fascinate the listener up to the point where it forces the listener to keep coming back to this cd, just to try to figure out if this guy is really insane or a genius. And that is when the music grabs you.
Babylon Mystery Orchestra is not a band that can be explained, it is something that you should feel. Weird music that takes a number of spins to thoroughly enjoy. Because music is, if you take away all the senseless discussions surrounding it, something that you should experience. That is not only the cd’s underlying message, it is also its main saving grace.
