Xandria - Ravenheart Abstract Sounds file under gothic metal
Aernout: Whereas we are slowly forgetting Within Temptation here in the Netherlands, the German based Xandria obviously hasn’t. At times their music resembles the godfathers (godmothers?) of the most recent gothic hype to such an extent that I think that had someone given me this disc and told me this was the new Within Temptation with a new singer, I might have believed them for the duration of a few songs. Why? The atmospheric decor of the songs (keyboard mostly) that gives face to the moments of peace but which is also so typical of the more bombastic parts of Within Temptation’s (more recent) repertoire are abundantly present in Xandria’s ‘Ravenheart’. And even though Sharon den Adel has a very typical sound, Lisa (a singer who can sing and (thank god) without a too typical nailbiting German accent) comes very close, especially in the higher pitch parts. Just like with Within Temptation the music has been carefully put together which makes the CD accessible to most of the gothic metal fans. The beginning of ”Eversleeping” is an example of this. In itself little surprising but so well written that it is going to be bloody difficult to find the weak spots. Frankly, I’m not going to. In fact, I think I might try and get hold of their debut, ‘Kill the Sun’. On account of this album, they deserved it.
(O, and should you think I have just thrown my credibility out of the window, read my Before The Dawn review and guess again...). Score 82/100 (details)
