Mythologic - Standing In Stillness
PMM Music

Mythologic - Standing In StillnessSjak: Mythologic is an American progressive metal band, which is formed around the two guitarists Steve Matusik and Chris Rodler (who is also responsible for the bass part on this album). The band is completed by drummer Brett Rodler (indeed, brother of Chris) and female vocalist Melissa Rodler (married to one of the Rodler brothers).

Inspiration for this band were quite obviously bands like Rush and Fates Warning and they show that these sources of inspiration can lead to very nice things. Guitarists Matusik and Rodler take care of very complex guitar parts, without losing sight of a decent song structure. Vocalist Melissa has a very clear voice and takes the band to a more melodic direction.

‘Standing in stillness’ opens quite surprisingly with an a cappella song called ‘Magic To Breathe’, which immediately shows the power of Melissa’s voice. After this opening track without instruments the complex riffs and ingenious solos are following very rapidly and in six long tracks this band leaves quite an impression. Highlight of this album is the almost ten minute lasting song ‘A Dim Too Dark’, which has everything in it that a great song should have.

It took a while before I really started to appreciate this album, but with each listening you discover new things in the music. Despite of the fact that the progressive metal scene is dominated by Dream Theater clones, I think that Mythologic first of all has a decent change to survive and secondly can become one of the better bands in near future. Great album.
