Vermin - Solypsis (Mini-CD) Self-financed Michiel B.: My goodness.. These guys know what hard work is. It has been eight months now since I reviewed their debut demo “Al Lacta Est” (read it at http://www.lordsofmetal.nl/showreview.php?id=1552&lang=nl is you are interested) of these death metallers originating from West-Brabant, NL and now it's already time for its follow-up the mini-album “Solypsis”.
Once again the band still haven't lost the grip on the gas and band leader Ron(head) Vermunt and his merry men treat us to 8 songs with a length of about half an hour in the best tradition of bands such as Meshuggah, Hate Eternal and Cannibal Corpse which means hyper-blasting drums and hysterical double vocals. Also included is a live song “Conquer” which also doesn’t sound bad at all. A nice extra to this disc is the CDROM part, which has been given much attention. It contains a nice shot video from the song “Deviate” from the debut demo as well as the band's biography and some cool pictures.
One thing that bothers me is the slightly unbalanced mix in which the vocals and drums put the guitars a too far to the back within the first few songs if you'd ask me. Also a little more power in the lower regions wouldn't be bad I guess. But well. If Vermin continues to keep delivering material in the same frequency they do now I'm pretty sure one day there will be a label who are willing to provide these guys with all necessary facilities in order to give these thundering songs an appropriate production. You can order “Solypsis” for 8 euro through the band. Judge M.'s verdict: 80/100
