Nail Within - Nail Within
Listenable

Nail Within - Nail WithinMarco: The band Nail Within is totally new to me. Not surprising, considering the fact that this Israelian band has not even been around for two years, although some of its members had distinct careers in other bands. Nail Within was found in 2001 after the Death Metal band Betrayer and the BlackMetal band Azazel split up. After some line up changes the band went to Germany to record their first album “Nail Within” under supervision of Harris Johns. Some people ask themselves now, “who is Harris Johns?” Johns carved out a name for himself as the engineer of especially German Thrash acts in the Eighties like Kreator, Helloween and Sodom He did also bands like Celtic Frost and our own Dutch Pestilence.

Nail Within plays furious, Scandinavian-style Death/Thrash Metal with a lot of melody and one can distinctly hear that its’ members earned their spurs throughout the years musically because the band plays very tight and the screaming vocals are powerful. The production is also fine, it looks like Johns hasn’t lost his touch yet. When listening to the CD one can also hear some contributions by different guest vocalists, like Mille of Kreator, Thomas Lindberg (At The Gates) and even Harris Johns himself. A somewhat weird videoclip (featuring the track “Dirty Coloured Knives”) is included on the CD.

But Nail Within doesn’t add anything to the existing spectrum of musical Metal styles. Not that it matters a single bit, but “Nail Within” lacks the catchy-ness to make this CD a truly great one. It’s more a very adequate CD, but tell me: is ‘adequate’ going to stand out in the overflowing stream of nowadays’ releases?

Thumbs up: 70/100
