Thijs: WornInRed is labeled punk/hardcore for convenience’s sake because this label doesn’t really fit this band. We’re dealing with some form of post-hardcore that reminds the listener of bands like Planes Mistaken For Stars or even Refused.
The keywords on this record are atmosphere and structure. The structure of the songs is far from ordinary, so don’t expect songs with easily hummable refrains. Of course there’s a lot of distortion on this record, but this band is not afraid to forget about distortion and it is at these times that they really come across. ‘When People Have Something To Say’ and ‘Fort Reno’ are examples of songs in which they do so and they manage to truly capture my attention. Which doesn’t mean that the other songs aren’t as well-written, they just don’t have that much appeal to me. I can imagine that for some people the opposite will be true. And for this reason I would like this band to choose which direction to head in. That way the follow-up of this record can as a whole make an impression on me.
So far my opinion after a few spins, but I’ve been listening to this record for more than a week now and it’s starting to grow on me. The emotionality in the songs sometimes reminds me of Hot Water Music but WornInRed is absolutely no clone. Their music is raw, and requires multiple spins to really get into it, but when you get it, you just want more. I should probably have more time for this review but you know how deadlines are, they are unrelenting. So take this score with a grain of salt, it might go up in weeks to come.
