Ramon: World To Ashes, from Freiburg Germany, was founded in 2005. Officially that is, as it took them until 2007 to reach a fully operational line-up. So they’ve had enough time to be “contemplating death”. When I take a look at their concert history, they have some fine connections that in turn trusted them to play with some bigger bands. And when I hear them, I can imagine that they did not fail. Despite the fact that this is their maiden voyage with Lords of Metal, they have done a release before, the demo ‘Of What There Is To Come’, which I personally think is a way better title than ‘In Contemplation Of Death’, seen in the light of what I get to see on a monthly basis.
World To Ashes plays melodic death metal, with a sense of drama, atmosphere and for death metal standards they have a surprisingly open sound. Without using too many alien styles, it keeps on being true death metal. The vocals mostly are a hysterical, crunchy thrash-death style, which gives a nice fanatic touch to the band. I seriously wonder what the band will do when you give them enough budget to hire a better studio. I think that a lot of more secrets hide underneath in their playing abilities and writing skills, which will then surface. But all together, you don’t hear me complain too much either now, it’s a nice first entry still.
