Jordy: A powerful amount of thrashcore could be considered als pollution by the metal veterans that grew up with the music of Slayer and other classic thrash bands, but the younger fans with an experimental twist will get surprised every now and then by this new genre. One of these surprising acts is the Italian band Phenium. Their demo ‘Incubhate’ impresses a lot and is a guide on how to mix modern influences with thrash the right way.
On this demo ‘Bleeding My Sorrow’ seems to be one of the best tracks of Phenium. Different styles mix together very well and kick you in the teeth. Old school thrash and elements from the metalcore genre go together very well, while at some times the vocals sound a lot like those of Disturbed. Besides that the band also shows potential with the track ‘Incubate’, a powerful up-tempo song with a melodic twist. Thanks to these elements this demo sounds very convincing. One thing that hurts the overall sound is the messy production. You could call this ‘raw’ or ‘classic’, but it’s obvious that it’s damaging the potential and qualities of the band.
Powerful, dynamic and surprising. The demo ‘Incubhate’ of Phenium contains all these elements which makes it a good release. This is thrashcore at its best.
