Wim: It is not that hard if you want to make music. You gather some like-minded people, you write some songs and you go for it! With a little luck a record company will notice you and you can - if you sell enough - release as many albums as you like. In short that will be the story of American Dog, a trio from Columbus, Ohio. They do not have to worry about sales anymore as ‘Mean’ is already their eleventh release. American Dog is especially popular in the biker scene. And there are quite a few of those in the United States. Also in the 'rust-belt’ (typical American working class cities like Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and Indianapolis) they just love the trio. This again has everything to do with the ‘working man / blue-collar’ image of the band. Guess how this sounds? You may never guess again. It is heavy rock with a dash of (punk) blues.
There are eleven tracks on this disc. Dirty, rocking and pounding. The same way bands like Zeke, Nashvilly Pussy and Peter Pan Speedrock like to do. It is heavy sing-along rock and roll with standard but sharp riffs and guitar solos by Steve Theado. And you can sing-along very easily for example on the Tank cover ‘Blood, Guts And Beer’, a song that fits perfectly in the style of the band. The production - by Joe Viers - is deliciously raw and rough. It is kind of sloppy that the order of the songs on the CD does not correspond with the order as printed on the back of the CD case. Perhaps an idea to invite these guys to this years ‘Zwarte Cross’?
