Evil Dr. Smith: Really, I did my best. The band have warned their fans. They would go into a different direction on this mini CD. A more restricted, discreet type of music. Well, you bet your ass they did! I’ve listened to this ‘Home & Minor EP’ three times and still I have to read on internet that the songs would be covers from Slayer, Cannibal Corpse and Prostitute Disfigurement. Ha ha, funny joke! Obviously, we’ve heard this before from Randy Hansen, Tori Amos, Mambo Kurt, Carnival In Coal or Hellsongs.
All right, I’ve listened to the album once again, but I refuse to accept the idea these chamber pop arrangements are covers from aforementioned bands. I think it’s a hoax, as a pigheaded counter-pressure for the narcoleptic results Oceansize comes up with. Even the lullaby version of Metallica songs sound more exciting. Did it take Oceansize really seven years of brainstorming to create this disappointment? It’s too busy (drum-wise) for dream pop, too straight-forward for psych/prog, too mellow for rock, too airy for triphop and simply too boring for good music. Muted trumpet here, guest singer Kate Ryan there, pedal steel this, electronics that, but for the tension it doesn’t matter, because there isn’t any. Oceansize has become a paddling pool. Instead I’ll put on their fantastic DVD/CD box ‘Feed To Feed’ again, and conclude with the song that perfectly suits the atmosphere of this EP:
Sleep, baby, sleep
Your father tends the sheep
Your mother shakes the dreamland tree
And from it fall sweet dreams for thee
Sleep, baby, sleep
Sleep, baby, sleep
