Sjak: In October 2006 after thirteen years finally the fourth studio album of Winger was released, simply entitled ‘IV’. That album, like in fact all Winger albums so far, was very much appreciated by yours truly and therefore I was very curious whether this ‘Karma’ could again match my high expectations. Luckily I can answer this question with a big yes, because ‘Karma’ is even better than the already mentioned reunion record from 2006.
The swinging ‘Deal With The Devil’ opens very good and showcases a very aggressive singing Kip Winger. Also ‘Stone Cold Killer’ is a mighty fine rocker and is dominated by a groovy guitar riff which makes it kind of impossible to sit still. As usual the guitar work of Reb Beach is truly awesome and he delivers one impressive solo after another. Of the other eight tracks on offer here I especially like ‘Pull Me Under’, the ballads ‘Always Within Me’ and ‘After All This Time’ and closing track ‘Witness, but the other songs aren’t too far behind in quality. It is and still remains a shame that this great band has been in hibernation mode for such a long time, but that had everything to do with the musical direction in the nineties. Luckily they’ve decided to catch up for lost time and they will also visit our country in the next couple of months. If I were you I’d better be there, since also on a live stage this is one hell of an act….
