Neithan: I don’t know whether it is due to the economic crisis sweeping this country, but Holland is turning into a damn doomed country. For years Officium Triste has been the flag bearer of Dutch doom metal, but there is some new talent coming up as well like Faal and Nymphea Aurora. Regarding to their ‘Misery…’ demo from 2007 Nymphea Aurora has made a considerable leap forwards, even if the basis is still the same. This development is to be heard on the re-recorded version of ‘A Touch Of An Angel’.
Even if the demo is called ‘Promo 2008’, it was not released until 2009, so I prefer the second title ‘Never Comes Silence’, which brings us two new songs and the earlier mentioned rerecorded song. The very first tunes immediately show that the tin sound from the previous demo is history, yet that the style has not changed that much: it has just been improved. Nymphea Aurora plays genuine doom/ death metal, very much in the vein of Officium Triste (just listen to the re-recorded ‘A Touch Of An Angel’) and a bit like early Paradise Lost, before they started using the gothic influences. What is rather different compared to the bulk of the bands in the genre is that Nymphea Aurora often uses very fast parts in between, at death metal paste. It is just because of the use of the keyboards that the atmosphere remains typically doom.
Yep, this demo is quite a step forward compared to the ‘Misery…’ demo, and I am not just talking about the overall sound. Whenever the band is through nursing babies (let’s say that the band has just emerged from a very fertile period, and I not referring to this release), I think that this promo should most certainly be able to get them appealing appearances as special guest to bigger doom bands, and these shows don’t have to be just on Dutch stages. And the good part is that these songs are meant to be as promo material for their debut album ‘Time Will Tell’, of which at this moment only time will tell when it will be released: for sure I am looking forward to that one!
