Pim B.: Marseille is a band that was formed under the name AC/DC in 1976 in Liverpool, but they soon changed their name due to that other band. After a couple of singles they recorded their debut ‘Red White and Slightly Blue’ and a year later the album ‘Marseille’ could be seen as their breakthrough. You can count the band as a part of the New Wave Of British heavy Metal (NWOBHM), although there is some discussion because they were a bit too early with their releases. Yet, NWOBHM isn’t a genre but an era where British heavy metal became very popular with bands like Iron Maiden and Saxon.
Compared to those bands Marseille is much softer. You can see it as a mix of early glamrock from the 70’s like Slade and Mott the Hoople with American acts like Aerosmith. That’s kind of where Marseille fits in and if they wouldn’t have thrown the towel in the mid 80’s they could have profited of the upcoming popularity of American hairbands in that time and era. Anyway, after 25 years they’re back and the deliver a nice disc with four songs. Hence the funny title ‘Fourplay’. On this demo you’ll find two new songs and tow rerecorded tracks, ‘Some Like It Hot’ and ‘You’re A Woman’, of the aforementioned 1979 album. Marseille plays nice hardrock with a nice sing-a-long factor. It’s not really overly exciting though. Fans of no-nonsense hardrock who like the material of Guns ’n Roses in their early years might appreciate this though. The keyword in this case is: funny!
