Sovversivo - Wild Emotions Self-financed file under different metal
Nima: Sovversivo’s history goes back to 1998 and in the following years the band released three demos and shared the stage with fellow countrymen Labyrinth, Doomsword and Rain, but also with bigger acts like Omen and Virgin Steele.
Anno 2009 these Italians are ready for a bigger step in their careers and recently release their first long player ‘Wild Emotions’. As the band takes off after the short intro with the title track, they reveal a powerful form of heavy metal with the melancholic atmosphere of the later works of Amorphis and Sentenced. During a song like ‘No Escape’ the band also strongly reminds me of Paradise Lost’s ‘One Second’ album. The band also uses influence from the thrash corner (later Metallica) and riffs a la Ozzy, Accept and even a bit of Pantera. Despite the various influences the band has succeeded in making a convincing mix and not to sound confusing and make an updated and original appearance.
Although the band clearly shows quality and in general I can appreciate the album, at the same time it doesn’t do much for me personally. That is mostly because I’m not always charmed with Andrea Uboldi’s vocals. Not that he does a bad job, but his rough voice doesn’t always fit to the music. It’s also because of his way of singing that the songs sound too accessible and MTV-friendly, which I dislike the most. Altogether the band has managed to come up with a sound of its own and the album contains a few strong tunes, which surly deserve to be heard. A pre-listen is the best advice I can give.
