Pÿlon - Doom Quam Libet Records file under doom metal
Erik: Pÿlon is a Finnish band consisting of just two members. They needed no less than six drummers, three guitar players and another guest vocalist to complete this CD with the giveaway name ‘Doom’, in case you are wondering what style they play in. Sixteen slow songs that bring an ode to the older doom gods.
This ‘Doom’ is a bit faster than the previous CD ‘Th’Ethernal Wedding Band’. The vocals of Matt Brand are a mixture of Count Raven and Pentagram, but less powerful and impressive and more monotone and more complaining. You can hear this in ‘Beneath, Beyond’, a calm song with loads of room for melody, guitars and interesting vocal lines. Musically comparison is easy, ranging from Saint Vitus to Black Sabbath to Paradise Lost on ‘Gothic. Still, Pÿlon impresses me by adding interesting instruments without overdoing it or falling in the tempting trap of overusing it. The CD looks well taken care of and the eye for detail is great! A nice and great listen, although I have to admit that the seventy-four minutes became a bit too much in the end to keep my full attention. Erik stigmatizes this release with: 80/100 (details)
