Frank V.: During the 80s of the last century I followed the Spanish metal scene with a big interest. It provided interesting bands as Baron Rojo, Obus and perhaps even the best of all Heroes Del Silencio. Most of you will know that this was a commercial band but in the early years they were worth checking out. Well now we put our old sentiments aside and focus on the Gauntlet. A major difference with the previously mentioned bands is that Gauntlet does not sing in Spanish but in English. The band have been around for over a decade, and this is their second full-length.
The CD is mastered in the famous Finnvox studios in Helsinki by Mika Jussila who was previously responsible for the mastering of Gamma Ray and Avantasia. The CD sounds good, clear and heavy and the instruments are open and clear. The singer has a reasonable voice and sounds a bit like Chris Cornell (Sound Garden) at times. The musical direction is different, not very original, solid heavy metal with lots of up-tempo parts with a modern feel to it. It reminds me of the later releases by Skid Row. The songs are all performed at a fairly high level, but after listening a few times you have heard enough. One of the best tracks is the fast 'Seeds Of Hate’. The opener '... Makes Us Stronger ‘ is a surprising song as well. Overall this is a nice CD. If you are on holiday in Spain and you bump into it, it is really worth your euros.
