Nima: After having copying many bands and making their last album ‘Victory’ with recognizable riffs and vocal lines, the Norwegian duo Gaia Epicus returns to their roots on the fourth album ‘Damnation’. Those roots are deeply rooted in Germany and have been fed by Gamma Ray.
Despite the lack of an own identity the band always used to come up with strong heavy metal compositions, but this fourth albums seems to lack also that! The songs sound too uninspired and although the album has a strong riffing in general, they have been played too carefully and too neat. Same goes for the other instruments and also the slick production of the album. It almost sounds as if in their quest to perfection the band has worked too carefully, which has had the opposite effect. The vocal lines of band chief Thomas Chr. Hansen may be well-thought off, but have been sang without any power or conviction and although people like Roland Grapow (Masterplan), Michael Troy (Malmsteen) and Dominique Leurquin (Rhapsody Of Fire) have contributed to the recoring process, that doesn’t seem to be enough to get ‘Damnation’ to a higher level.
Altogether this is another typical average melodic power metal album that is hardly worth to mention when you look at the amount of releases. And that’s a pity, because in the past they have proven to have enough talent and ability.
