Koen: Established in 1996, Escutcheon hails from Borne (The Netherlands) and plays vicious yet melodious death metal in the Gothenburg style of bands such as At The Gates, Eucharist, Dissection and (old) In Flames. In the past the five some (which holds members of Cromm Cruac, Pulverizer, The Lament Configuration and Devious) released the ‘In Tranquil Chaos’ (1997) and ‘Into Orbit’ (1998) demo’s, a full-length entitled ‘Unexplained Deep Space Phenomenon’ (2001) and a DVD called ‘Live Stage Phenomenon’ (2004). After sharing the stages with bands like Pungent Stench, Pleurisy and Altar, all went quiet and activities seized.
In 2007 Escutcheon reformed and wrote and recorded songs for their new album ‘Battle Order’ which was recently released through Deity Down Records. Well I must admit that Deity Down Records strikes again with a great release, because the band plays melodic death metal the way it was meant to be played: fast, harmonious, loud and angry as hell. Big arrangements, small details, smashing vocals and great musicians make this a diverse and intriguing effort which is a must-have for maniacs who adore aforementioned bands. Support the Dutch metal scene and check out ‘Battle Order’ as soon as possible. This album is already a candidate for my album of the year and 2009 has only just begun!
