Trident - Chained To Routines (Demo) Self-financed file under punk / hardcore
Ramon: A mature band, especially when taking into consideration the kind of genre they venture in. Then again, it is not miraculous or anything, ‘cause you have to be around at least fifteen years to have consciously experienced the Brooklyn hardcore wave, which they so proudly try to imitate here. But to be honest, it is a little bit more than just that. Let me start with the vocals. I can be short about that, which I will not be. When a bunch of people had to make a list of the ten best heavy singers, a couple of names would reappear almost any time. Devin Townsend, Phil Anselmo, Corey Taylor, maybe Chester Bennington, but most certainly Rob Flynn too. The last one is shamelessly copied here by Trident. I don’t not know if that’s on purpose, but it’s undeniable. And not even all that good. Ridiculously comes closer. Despite the fact that two people’s voices can just sound a bit similar without premeditated intentions, the power, passion and the way Flynn goes up into a song is not matched at all. It’s like comparing the acting skills of Jodie Foster to Jessica Simpson’s. Let there be no mistake that I would not give the lead singer of Trident the same esteem I would on La Simpson on any point. Just to compare. Then again, Flynn is a major leaguer.
The band pays a little too much credit to the title of their demo. I have nothing against clichÈs, but don’t overdo it. It all sounds fairly good, and especially for a demo it has an astonishing production, yet it doesn’t charm me too much. I do think that Trident will be able to find a serious live-audience on festivals. But I will probably not be among them in the crowd. The music itself is perfect for guys that just want to get loose and don’t care about anything for a while. The lyrics are above average. Two phrases are remarkable. These are “A Moment Of Clarity” and “Control Denied”. The singer is (just like Rob Flynn) guitarist as well, but the now presumed influences of Schuldiner are nowhere to be found. His name is Aleksi. Wasn’t there another singer / guitar player from Finland with that name?
Let me objectively phrase that Trident is in its kind a positive high-flyer. They are quite able to maintain interest with an undeniable dose of creativity, they have good musicians and they play together real tightly, although they formed only three years ago. The production is very professional and it was recorded in Finland and mastered in Ireland. So this disk has seen quite a bit of Europe even before its release. If the tide is right, I am sure so will its fathers. Rating: 70/100 (details)
