Darkest Era - The Journey Through Damnation (Mini-CD)
Northern Silence Productions

file under heavy / power metal

Darkest Era - The Journey Through DamnationNima: Started as Nemesis in 2005, this Irish band already introduced itself to the metal world and recorded a demo. Last year they changed the name into Darkest Era and now this debut EP is a fact. In their own words they describe their music as Celtic Metal, but I’m not sure if this term justifies the music completely. Although the Celtic influences are clearly audible, the music of this quintet has a lot more to offer.

Firstly the sound of Viking metal and traditional heavy metal have the upper hand in the songs. But besides that the influences from black and doom metal are present at some points. Here and there the band reminds me of Bathory (especially because the melancholic and epic sound) and thanks to the folk influences, the comparison with their fellow countrymen Primordial is unavoidable. Although I must admit that the genius of Primordial cannot be topped, but that aside. But still ‘The Journey Through Damnation’ contains four variable and listen able songs and even though not all are equally convincing, a song like ‘Visions Of The Dawn’ simply hungers for more. The vocals of Dwayne “Krum” Maguire is definitely a matter of taste and need more time to get used to, but he most definitely shows that his capable of singing. A bit of variety in the vocals wouldn’t have been bad either, but that can be a point of attention for the future. Fans of epic heavy metal with Viking, folk and Celtic influences should keep an eye on this band.
