Roel F.: Whereas ‘Mondfinsternis’ (Moon Darkness/Darkness Of The Moon) was a compilation of older demo tracks, Brocken Moon’s latest is composed of new material. In this respect, one could argue that ‘Das Märchen Vom Schnee’ (The Fairy Tale About The Snow) is the band’s debut CD.
Fortunately, Brocken Moon has stayed true to their old style. The main emphasis still lies with swift and downcast black metal. Instantly recognisable are the intermezzos during which a sole guitar, sometimes with keyboards and/or drumming, conveys some deeply emotional content. Likewise, the vocal delivery has also maintained its moving and sad quality, as it changes from screeching (almost like an owl?) to lower screaming to spoken word passages. The drum patterns are a striking feature, here: much has been done with feeling for variety and detail. It is quite obvious that it is all about atmosphere for Brocken Moon. In this case, it is a carefully constructed atmosphere that revolves around a brooding sense of loneliness that functions really well. This is courtesy of an enhanced and clear production that provides the necessary breathing space for the instruments. The compositions sound mature and effectual and all the building blocks have been carefully placed so as to provide for a strong foundation.
This results in six chapters that live up to their full potential; Brocken Moon is equal to balanced and effective black that, due to good dynamics and real tension, sounds right and seriously convincing. The tracks change mood frequently, going from icily malevolent and fast paced to a potentially more comfortable setting in which the soothing melodies are truly engaging. Brocken Moon finishes ‘Das Märchen Vom Schnee’ with a twenty minute piece that is based on one single riff that is repeated over and over while, as the end gets nearer, growingly present and semi-psychedelic keyboard sounds are strewn about. A good climax to a great album.
