Sorgsvart - Vikingtid Og Anarki Einheit Produktionen file under black/pagan metal
Roel F.: This ‘Norks AnArkistisk Svart Metall’ is really something else. The sole band member behind Sorgsvart, the young Sorg, apparently is a real all-rounder. There are more one man bands around, but the maturity and ability on display here - Sorg does all the singing (from clean to choir to scream) and plays all instruments (except for the drums on some of the songs, but all Norwegian ethnic instruments included)- are quite astonishing, especially for someone, judging from the photo’s, that young.
There is something amiss here, and that is that everything works so well on this record. The tracks are really, really catchy on account of great keyboard/piano work and well-executed, non-boring choirs and there is an enormous amount of thrust and diversity to be heard. The guitars sound either kind of icy or crunching and at the right moments the riffs change from speedy to epic-like. All elements are nothing new in themselves (especially the choirs and the ho-ho-ho-Viking shouting), but on ‘Vikingtid Og Anarki’ they have been fused together so that it sounds new. The acoustic parts, the epic flashes, the aforementioned Viking choirs, the jumpy and cheerful leads, then, are not unusual, but Sorg was able to use them to fill up the limited spaces within the tracks in such a way that everything can function and breathe together in a manner that is fresh, without detracting from one another (on track seven there are some traces of Eurodance, even). This notion is enhanced by many tempo and melody changes. There is not much elso to say, only that this should be heard. Rating: 83/100 (details)
