Various Artists - Heavy Metal Nation IV
Quam Libet Records

file under different metal

Various Artists - Heavy Metal Nation IVVera: Quam Libet Records is always looking for new talent in their homeland - in this case Switzerland - and brings a new bunch of young metal bands under our attention on this fourth compilation. It is a quite diverse record with bands playing classical hardrock, metal with folk till Viking/true metal and in the latter part of the album a bit heavier crossover bands.

Starting with Gonoreas, a band continuing the tradition of classic hardrock bands like Gotthard and Krokus. A good vocalist and a neoclassical guitar solo make a sure-fire song of ‘Love To Rock’, although lyrics are very cliché. Dystera sees things a bit more adventurous. With flutes and female vocals, ‘Plight Of The Knights’ can be labelled as folk metal. ‘Religious Liberty’ of Pertness is epic. It is firm metal with rough vocals and sturdy choirs close to Viking metal. Soul Line presents classic metal with twin guitars. Emerald sides with “true” metal bands, but vocals are capable of improvement. I prefer the keyboard larded heavy riffs of Lordren or the groove-laden rock of Grey Monday with ‘Nonetheless’, a strong track. Next the emphasis switches to some thrash bands. Secondhand Child with a punk approach, Shadow’s Far with a hardcore edge and flaming guitars. After a few minor songs Aggressive Sound Painters appears to be an agreeable surprise. Their modern metal includes heavy riffs, roaring vocals but a fetching chorus with clean vocals as well. Same recipe for Mostly Harmless in ‘Choices’; a song with an instant charm. November-7 is completely different. Dreamy keyboards and female vocals, but it is a very catchy song, nearly pop. As we see, also in Switzerland one may conclude that there is activity in all of the subgenres of the metal world. Those who like to discover new bands have got seventy-seven minutes of various music to check out on this compilation.
