Officium Triste - The Pathway (Re-release)
Displeased Records

file under doom metal

Officium Triste - The PathwayVera: Recently I attended a marvellous gig of Officium Triste again at the Dutch Doom Days VI at the Baroeg. In the set list one could find old songs like ‘Pathway (Of Broken Glass)’ and ‘This Is Goodbye’ of the album ‘The Pathway’. Some of the songs - for instance ‘Roses On My Grave’ - became true doom classics in the meantime. The album was out of print for a long time and that is why Displeased Records decided to release it again, re-mastered and extended with five bonus tracks.

When your collection of this Rotterdam based doom metal band was not complete yet, this reissue is a dream come true. There is not that much changed at the entire sound, it remained rather authentic. We notice that the vocals of Pim Blankenstein got much more powerful and confident through the years. And that technical evolution in the studio did not stand still either. In spite of this, it remains a pleasure to enjoy songs like ‘Roses On My Grave’ and the ponderous ‘Deep Down’ which includes a solemn spoken part. In almost every song vocals alternate from heavy grunts to clean vocals and sometimes spoken fragments. All this is veined with melancholic guitar solos. Keyboards make it all complete. Sometimes soaring synthesizers, sometimes classical piano that opens the track ‘Camouflage’ in a very beautiful manner. With classical doom/death ingredients, Officium Triste has always created intense music with lots of atmosphere. Even way back in 2001, let us put this straight!

As bonus tracks we have ‘Roses On My Grave’ in a version of the EP with the same name and a live version of this song, recorded at the 013 in Tilbury in 2002. The registration of ‘Pathway’ live was done there too. ‘Headstone’ and ‘Divinity’ are coming from a promo of 2000. With ‘The Pathway’ you get an historical doom metal record in your collection and if offers seventy-five minutes deep-draught emotions.
