Vendetta - Tyranny Of Minority
Lion Music

file under heavy / power metal

Vendetta - Tyranny Of MinorityNima: Some of you might know guitarist/singer Edward Box from his solo albums ‘Plectrumhead’ and ‘Moonfudge’. Now he has put up a new band with Vendetta with the intention to create traditional metal and I must say that he has succeeded in doing so. He has gathered a group of excellent musicians and has put a lot of effort in training his voice and the song writing.

The first result of this cooperation is to be heard on ‘Tyranny Of Minority’. When the band kicks off with ‘Generation Kill’ after a short intro, it becomes clear that Box’s source of inspiration lies within the eighties rock and heavy metal. The music breathes an old-fashioned atmosphere and sounds a bit modern at the same time. Same thing goes for the production of this record. Although it sounds as if the songs were recorded in the eighties, the production is clear and powerful, which makes the songs make stand. ‘Tyranny Of Minority’ has mostly become a guitar album. The riffs may not be complex, but sound heavy and familiar at the same time. Fortunately there’s also enough room for beautiful solos (something I often miss with the newer bands). To get an idea about the musical direction you can think of Saxon (both old and new). Especially Box’s vocals show quite some similarity with Biff’s. But a song like ‘Golden Boy’ has a strong Def Leppard-feel and ‘Red Skies’ sounds a bit more modern and I have to think of Hammerfall. But often I also have to think of the sound of a younger band like Shakra.

My point of criticism on this album is the playing time, which is a bit too long. Because although the songs contain enough variety and they all sound respectable, the album doesn’t have real highlights. Edward Box’s voice is also a bit monotonous, by which the album threatens to become a bit boring at the end. Altogether we can say that ‘Tyranny Of Minority’ has become a worthy debut and will surely apply to the fans of melodic hardrock and heavy metal. The music may not be renewing or original, but still I think it’s a worthy addition to the collection. Make sure to have heard it at least once.
