Darkane - Insanity
Nuclear Blast

Horst: The year 2001 slowly is turning into a beautifull musical episode in my life, for in the endless sea of releases I continue to find lots of great new albums. Take for example the new album from the Swedish band Darkane. Holy shit!!! It's almost unbelievable what these guys manage to put on record with 'Insanity'. Those of you who are already familiar with the band through their debut album 'Rusted Angel' will know that Darkane means a furious, raging Death/Thrash attack on the wellbeing of your highly expensive speakerset. And if you (like me) enjoyed 'Rusted Angel', then you're in for a treat : 'Insanity' continues were 'Rusted Angel' left of, though even better. In the words of drummer Peter (like he told me in the interview wich you can read somewhere else in this issue) : 'A little bit more of everything'. Well, the man told truth, for after the beautifull (classic) intro 'Calamitas' the opening track 'Emenation Of Fear' literally bursts out of the speakers (give that producer a cigar!). It sounds deliciously violent and powerfull, but also humangously varied. Riffs and breaks are everywere, combined with the perfect dosis of speed, in songs that every now and then slow down into threatening dark and lingering intermissions, only to find a climax in a storm of raging Thrash/Death Metal (check out 'Hostile Phantasm', than you'll know what I mean). The new singer Andreas Sydow is a great addition to the band, for his reach enables him to sing from clean through screaming up 'till grunting, wich gives the album that special 'bite'. Now 'Insanity' might seem a bit difficult when you listen to it for the first time, but believe me : it's getting better and better with every spin...and isn't that a trademark for a real 'classic'? All the songs are of the same (high) level, and it really doesn't matter if it's a speed driven maniac like 'Psychich Pain' (with as special guest Meshugga's Fredrik Thordendal), or a mid-tempo pounding metal track like 'Inauspicious Coming', this is value for your hard earned money!!! The album reaches it's climax in 'Pile Of Hate', the final track wich lasts for over 8 minutes, in wich everybody shows their skills (both instrumentally as in songwriting) once more and forge it all into one big pandemonium. It's only for the best that the album ends with the spheric, but dark outro 'Inverted Speres', wich allows you two minutes of rest, before you push the 'play' button again...and again...and again...and again...

Rating: 95/100
