Arch Enemy - Rise Of The Tyrant Century Media file under death metal / grindcore
Patrick: After his departure from Carcass, Michael Amott formed Arch Enemy. And directly from 'Black Earth' (1997) the recognition and success were there. Both 'Stigmata' (1998) en 'Burning Bridges' (1999) turned into milestones. Accompanied by flawlessly technical dual guitars a mixture of melody and aggression was displayed. This helped them to quickly solidify their reputation as one of the genre's elite. After the arrival of vocalist Angela Gossow the sky seemed the limit and … hey, so what; 'Rise Of The Tyrant' is already Arch Enemy's seventh album and everybody should know by now what to expect from this band so this whole history narration is superfluous.
'Rise Of The Tyrant' is another typical Arch Enemy disc. The band reverts to the sound they showed at 'Wages Of Sin'. If that has to be with the return of Christopher Amott? Arch Enemy send out a lot of recognizability at any rate. But that could as well be the Achilles' heel of this album. The innovative element has long gone and it could quite well be that you feel that 'Rise Of The Tyrant' is too predictable or even feels the band repeats themselves too much. The brawling of Angela has not lost any of its power, the fast, melodic riffs are present and replenished with a bunch of nice solos. The aggressive, cheeky charisma of the songs have not lost any of its fervour and fibre and songs as t 'Blood On Your Hands', 'The Last Enemy', 'I Will Live Again', 'Rise Of The Tyrant' and 'The Great Darkness' (with choir) are bound to become Arch Enemy classics. 'Intermezzo Liberte', an instrumental track, shows a more modest side of the band. With Frederik Nordstrom (At The Gates, Dimmu Borgir, In Flames) doing the production a powerful sound is guaranteed and that is not different on Arch Enemy's new disc.
Although 'Rise Of The Tyrant' may not bet hat innovative and show us a sound we have heard from Arch Enemy before, they sure are almost back at the level of a 'Wages Of Sin'. If you feel there is nothing wrong with recognizability and Arch Enemy has been able to intrigue you with their releases till now, than 'Rise Of The Tyrant' will be a cd which you definitely will find enjoyable.
