<< Interviews this month

Cirith Gorgor recently released a taster in the shape of a 7”. The band has no contract with Osmose anymore, so I speak with Marchosias what the future may hold for them.
Text: Arjan
I understood there have been some changes in the line-up. Can you tell who left (and why) and who joined?
Well you haven’t heard our second CD so you probably don’t know that I replaced guitar player Asmoday about 3½ years ago. He moved and lost his interest in Cirith Gorgor. Almost a year ago guitar player Astaroth Daemonum left the band also, because there were differences within the band concerning where to go. After searching for half a year we found a new guitar player, Inferno, who is a good friend of us and plays in Black Metal band Tartaros.
Has this had any influences on the new songs?
Of course! At first, Astaroth and I wrote the songs together, but right now I do it all by myself. I have to say that I like it very much and we as a band even think we’re producing our best songs ever.
You’ve recently recorded a new promo, probably with the reason to get the attention of a new label?
Yes, but you can guess how these things go. You put a lot of fucking time in the recording and distribution of a promo and what’s the result? No one replies! It’s too bad we need a label at all for good promotion and distribution, I don’t like that business. What you really need are some enthusiastic people for whom Black Metal is a way of life and not a way of making a living.
What is the difference between the second album and this promo according to you?
The songs on the promo show which way we want to go with Cirith Gorgor. The songs are more raw and aggressive then ever, which is courtesy of the brutal production by the bass player of Melechesh (Q-Sonic Productions). The songs are a little less complex and contain fewer riffs. The lay-out is also what you can expect in the coming years, back to the glorious days of Burzum and Dark Throne!!
You have recorded four new songs, what will happen with the other two?
Of the four songs we’ve recorded, three will be re-recorded for the next CD. The song ‘Infinite Consecration’, which is on side B of the 7”, will remain an exclusive.
I have never heard your second album, but from a lot of people I heard that it was less good than the first one. What do you think of this yourself? What’s the difference between the first and second album?
Well it’s something personal of course. I myself think that ‘Unveiling...’ goes a lot deeper then the debut. The riffs are a lot better and the overall sound is a lot better. It has been the first step to an ever darker Cirith Gorgor. Songs like ‘Into A Nightly Silence’ and ‘The Stormrulers’ are songs that you have to listen to multiple times before you get the atmosphere. People who can’t handle the complexity of that album, will have to jump in the water with a stone around their neck. The only bad thing I think people don’t like is the average drum sound. It sounded great in the studio, of course, but looking back it is disappointing!
Was there any pressure for a second album? With this I mean that on the first album there are also songs from the demo from 1997; these were between 2 and 3 years old.
Pressure? You don’t make music under pressure, no matter what!!! That’s also the reason why there will be over 2½ years between the second and third CD, grrrrrrr!!!!!! If we have enough songs it will be time again to think about possible recordings!!
The first album has been recorded in the rehearsal place, the second in Harrow studios. How and where was the promo recorded?
The drums on the promo have been recorded in Lelystad, the rest in Amstelveen. It all went with co-operation of the bass player of Melechesh, definitely a good guy with a great feeling for what the band wants and Black Metal in general. His company is called Q-Sonic Productions (http://www.Q-sonic.nl). Not for the weak hearted!!!
Your albums have been released by Osmose, and with that you were the first Dutch band to have a contract with them. How did you feel of being amongst great bands like Angelcorpse, Absu, Vital Remains, Enslaved?
Well I can’t talk about this because I wasn’t in the band back then. But I did bought the demo in 1997 and I thought they were one of the best bands of our country. I really liked it when I heard they signed with Osmose!
And then you suddenly had the whole Dutch underground on your tail (jealous of course, but they didn’t admit) because they had to work with smaller companies. You got the name Circus Gorgor there.
Well that’s just bullshit! I don’t care about it that much. I’m more the person who wants to drink a beer with them so that they really get to know us.
Why a 7”? I don’t think that’s very interesting for your “target group”?
Explain yourself! Do we have a target group? 65+ or handicapped Jewish environmentalists? That’s bullshit, if there’s anything Black Metal, it has to be a brutal, hand numbered 7”!!!!!!!!!!
Some time ago I saw you over hear in Atak, Enschede and I noticed you had a really bad sound. Back then you were also looking for a good soundman. Have these problems been solved?
No, we don’t have a steady soundman and we’re not looking for one anymore. We haven’t done many gigs lately anyway, so there’s no real need. As far as I’m concerned, the clubs have to have a decent soundman... Our music is always played well and tight, if the people agree with that. We just had a show in Desselgem, Belgium, where we had a great sound, you can see it on the reactions from the audience. But bad things also happen...
Any other news?
If everything goes as planned we will start a small tour through Europe with Mor Dagor from Germany and Asmodeus from Austria.
End this the way you want.
