Text: Frank D.

For those readers who don't know you: You're a Swedish band, which was formed back in 1998 out of Greyhate and Clench. Can you tell us a little more about those early years? How did you get together?
Well, we all came from the same small town Enköping and knew each other from way back, so when the Trash band Clench (Thomas Piehl, Jens Wide, Örjan Baudin) finally broke up due to several setbacks and the heavyrockband Greyhate (John Hermansen) gave it up as well, it came natural that some of us got together. Me, Piehl, Wide and Baudin talked about it and got together just to see how it felt. We wrote a lot of unreleased material for a couple of years before we finally started to feel that we were going in the direction we wanted. That material would eventually end up in the debut album ‘Grandiosity’ in 2004. Before that we just participated under the name Nosedive on a couple of compilations such as ‘The Mighty Desert Rock Avengers’ released by People Like U records (Germany) and ‘Unsigned For Now’ released by Mighty Music (Denmark).

The line-up changed since the release of your previous album ‘Grandiosity’. What happened?
At that time we were touring a lot in Sweden and we had just been contacted by Daredevil Records and Rock This Town about doing a tour in Germany. Örjan Baudin (bass) was the first to leave the band. He wasn’t really into the touring bit that much. He then got replaced by Marcus Jäderholm (Greyhate) a great cool bass player which I knew from before as one of my oldest friends and from the Greyhate days. Then shortly after Jens Wide (drums) left the band due to lack of time and effort to put into the band, he got replaced by the awesome drum basher Jimmy Lindbergh (Evelyn Grace) which is actually a distant relative to the famous pilot Charles Lindbergh, hahaha. What happened to the band at that time was that we were now four members with the same hunger and need to make good music, get out on the roads and let people know about Mother Misery.

Is being part of Mother Misery a full time occupation or do you have jobs on the side?
Unfortunately we cannot make it on the music alone at this time, but we hope to get there and I don’t think that it’s impossible.

Let’s go to your latest release: the ‘For The Crows’ EP. First off, why did you choose to release an EP instead of a full-length album?
We really needed to get something out fast just to keep up the interest in the band. It was also a matter of money which we, as a struggling band, don’t have too much of. We financed the debut ‘Grandiosity’ all by ourselves and it went well, but if we’re going to do another full length album we want it to be done for real and with someone who could back it up good. So, we thought we’d put out this hook with 5 killer songs that would awake the interest of the big fishes, if you know what I mean.

Lords of Metal

You've signed a deal with the Dare Devil Records label, why did you decide to sign with them?
First of all we haven’t signed anything with Daredevil yet. They’re a great company which has helped us a lot and took a lot of interest in the band. We got to be on their compilation ‘Burn The Streets Vol. #4’ together with a lot of cool acts like: Entombed, El Caco, Nine, Alabama Thunderpussy, etc. They’ve also helped us with the sales and promotion of ‘Grandiosity’ and ‘For The Crows’.

In my review this month I state that Mother Misery made a giant leap forward with this new CD. Do you feel the same way about the new release and why?
Yeah, we feel the same way! This is the best we’ve done so far, I think, even though I love the ‘Grandiosity’ album. I think it has a lot to do with the new fire that got into the band since Marcus and Jimmy joined. I also feel that the more "simple" straight ahead direction we’ve strayed into suites us better.

Your record company states that your sound will go down well with Soundgarden fans, but I also hear a heavy shot of stoner and space rock in there. How would you describe your own music and what kinds of music and/or bands made a lasting impression on the music of Mother Misery?
Well…I can’t lie, Soundgarden and Monster Magnet etc. have been big influences in at least my life, but I don’t feel that we come that close to them music wise even though we’re compared to them a lot. We’re not out to create something new and never heard before. We just do what feels right and what comes from our hearts and hope that it will be unique for some of the people out there, hahaha.

One of the highlights on the CD is ‘I Will Never Learn’. Can you tell us a little more about the story behind this track?
Ok. Well, it’s kind of a traditional story actually and one of the most personal I’ve written. After coming home from a tour with my other band The Awesome Machine last year, me and my girlfriend since 9 years back got separated. That hit me pretty hard and stayed on for a long time which made me a little bit self-destructive and at one point in the middle of it I came up with those lyrics.

This release has just hit the streets. What are the reactions so far?
The reactions have been very good so far from both fans friends and media; we’ve received a lot of good reviews on this one.

Imagine you and the guys are on the road and you get stuck on a deserted island. Each one of you could bring just one album with him. Which four albums would be brought along?
Oooh...hard question... but there probably would be:
‘Superunknown’ - Soundgarden
‘Powertrip’ - Monster Magnet
‘Heaven and Hell’ - Black Sabbath
‘Holy Diver’ - Dio

What are your other plans for the near future? Touring, full length album?
We will do this Germany tour, which begins in like six hours. Zzzzz, hahahaha. When we get back home there will be more promotions with Swedish TV and radio and we will do a lot of shows as well. Then, in the summer, we will probably go back to Germany to do some festivals and another tour.

Is there anything else you want to share with our readers?
Yeah !! Be sure to check out the new CD, it´s a killer and we know you’ll love it. Hope to see you guys on the road.
