Modus Operandi: Romain Goulon (Benighted)

When did you start playing drums?
I started playing drums at the age of 12 (I’m 35 now).

What where your first drums?
My father bought me my first drumkit at the age of 13 I guess. Honestly, it was not really a famous brand, but at least it was perfect to start.

On which piece of gear do you keep your most beautiful memories and why?
My first drumkit of course. The first day I got my kit was in the middle of the week, and I didn’t want to go to bed while we, my sister, brother and me, had to go to school the next day.

Do you have an endorsement deal or a signature model? If so, could you tell us a little bit more about it?
Yes, I’m endorsed by TAMA drums, MEINL cymbals, PRO MARK sticks, EVANS drumheads.
For each I have my good reasons. My favourite drummers have been playing on TAMA, those drums have a real particular type of sound I love (round, powerful, percussive, natural), and they make the strongest hardware. I fell in love with the MEINL cymbals because they sound mixed, are never aggressive, are overall versatile, very strong and have a unique tonality and projection. The EVANS drumheads are, to me, the strongest heads. They are easy to tune, and they simply sound great on my drums, and the company comes up with really interesting innovations. Regarding the PRO MARK Hickory sticks, the tip almost never breaks, the sticks doesn’t break until they are completely eaten up by some intense playing, and most important they have the perfect balance and weight.

What was your worst purchase ever and why?
Once I forgot my drum throne, and I had to buy a cheap one from a no real brand, since the closest music store didn’t have much choice. Useless to say I kept it for one rehearsal and never used it again, never sold it, now way to sell something like this.

Who are your influences (musicians)?
There are many, many, many… But if I have to give some names: Dave Grohl, Lars Ulrich, Dave Lombardo, Vinnie Paul, Nicko McBrain, Virgil Donati, Dave Weckl, Mike Mangini, Mike Portnoy, Pete Sandoval, Tony Laureano, John Longstreth, Vinnie Colaiuta, and many more…

What is still on your wish list?
All the new products. I’m really excited about the new cymbals MEINL is going to release.

Ultimate goal as a musician?
Release and produce my own albums, with me on drums and guitars. I’m writing my first album with guitar parts that don’t make sense for my actual guitar level. But I’ve learned from my experience that everything is possible with work. I’m on it, and it’s more and more promising.
