Modus Operandi: Twan van Geel - Legion Of The Damned

By: Ramon

The Dutch thrash mongers Legion Of The Damned will release their new effort titled ‘Slaves of the Shadow Realm’ in early 2019. Guitarist Twan van Geel is part of a multitude of bands, but since him joining Legion Of The Damned as lead guitarist in 2011, that is all thing considered his main band, or at least the one that is in the spotlight the most. His musical background is more than interesting and he once more shows that inspiration can from very unexpected angles. Besides the obvious ones, of course. And let’s just be real, outside of metal there is a lot of stuff going one with a venomous twist to it too, which can only allow you to put more different colours on your palette. The equipment, the tools, the coming of age and of course the Dos and DON’Ts of Twan, can all be read below..

When did you start playing guitar/bass/keys/drums?
I started playing guitars at eight years old, but next to guitars, I was also attracted to all other instruments, be that drums, piano, violin or whatever since I can recall.

On which piece of gear do you keep your most beautiful memories and why?
I believe that has to be my Alexi Blacky signature ESP. I bought it from my first salary, which I earned with my first tour with Legion of the Damned. It was expensive, but it’s still such a goddamn hot and ass kicking guitar, I love it!

Awesome, we liked that guitar a lot too. Do you have an endorsement deal or a signature model?
We are endorsed by ESP and Schechter for bass and guitars, and Pearl for the drums. It’s not that we get everything for free, but we get a nice discount at our purchase and they help us out if necessary, when in need.

Sounds fair enough. What was your worst purchase ever and why?
Ernie Ball strings, which came in card board boxes, almost over fifty packages with strings with rust all over it. Who’s to blame? Probably it got stored in a warehouse with a big moist problem or a roof leakage.

Who are your influences (musicians)?
I’m inspired by a lot of different non- metal artists from Nick Cave to Lana Del Ray to Muse and Placebo etcetera. When it comes to inspiration for the band I’d name Sadus, Infernal Majesty, Possessed, Dissection, Kreator and yes…Slayer.

What was your first guitar/bass/keys/drums?
My first electric guitar was an Ibanez Joe Satriani, custom made, black.

What is on your wish list?
Nothing actually, besides for living a long and healthy happy life. Just recently I became a proud and grateful owner of a 19 inch Kemper profiler Amp for my own side projects. I already have my Wine Red Gibson Les Paul Classic guitar as well. On top of that I’m lead guitar player in a serious asskicking brutal thrash metal band, I have the sweetest girlfriend supporting me, and three adorable Guinea pigs! What’s more to wish for?

Ultimate goal as a musician?
Keep doing what I like and get to enjoy all the great things that come with that. Oh, and world fame and get to sell out Wembley Arena of course!
