Frank D. : When you stick around long enough in this world you can see bands develop. Some take a nosedive and others climb the ladder. One of the bands that's making its way up that ladder is Monkey 3. This Swiss stoner band makes a giant leap forward with their new album '39 Laps'.
I found the previous album not completely convincing. How different it is this time around. '39 Laps' gets me on the tip of my seat from the very first second. Opener 'Xub' is a full force kick in my groin. The band has gained power and initiative during the last couple of years. The debut was occasionally dull, but now things are really happening on this record. You can listen to it over and over again and still find new things. Yes, Monkey 3 matured. Next up is the hypnotic 'Last Moulinao'; a track which wouldn't be out of place on the latest Astrosoniq. The band limits the amount of tracks to six, but takes over 51 minutes (!) to play them. Each and every one of them is a musical impressionistic painting in the tradition of founding fathers Hawkwind. The most remarkable track however is a cover: the well known theme of 'Once Upon A Time In The West'. This turned out to be a respectful cover, but with a distinct own twist. I tip my hat for this, guys!
In short, the true space rockers amongst you can buy this without a second thought!
