Roel de Haan : Hlubiny is Self-Hatred their second album to date. These Czechs play doom/death metal in a fairly traditional way, yet there is something peculiar about their music. Sure there are the obvious influences by giants like My Dying Bride (church organ) and October Tide (melodies), but there is a distinct black metal vibe present throughout their melodic doom metal. This is mostly due to many tremolo picked riffs and the occasional high pitched shriek. It does provide the listener with more than mere depression. Who does not like some eeriness in the music? Hlubiny is not a total crush-fest, nor is it a ultra-depressive affair, it simply offers an agreeable slab of melodic doom metal. Highly enjoyable, but, in all fairness, not a masterpiece of the genre.
