Roel de Haan : The Onlooker is the second full-length of the Ukrainian black metal band Windswept. Windswept consists of members of Drudkh and therefore there are many similarities to be found. The differences are more interesting though. Windswept has a smaller bandwidth than Drudkh. Essentially this means there are no folk passages, no mood enhancing samples and no acoustics here, only unadulterated black metal. Pounding drums (with not a lot of variety), typical Saenko riffing and raspy screams are the primary ingredients of Windswept. Yet despite the stripped down approach and high amount of repetition, the songs tend to have an epic character and melancholy side, we have come to expect from its makers. And that makes The Onlooker really worth your time. One can really let their mind wander off into pagan bliss and cold steppes. So fans of Ukrainian black metal are once again in for a treat.
